I recieved a real doozy of a question for October...read it over so that we can all be thinking about it over the next month. One of the reasons that I really love this question is that it has a footnote!
Does prayer really change things? Should prayer be used only to thank God for all he has given us or are we allowed to ask for *things? If God has a plan for our lives, prayer won't change anything: all we can hope for is to be able to accept what is already going to happen.
*by "things" I mean health, family harmony, safe travel...NOT new cars, boats vacations, etc...

Look at Abraham praying for Sodom. Did God change His mind and say that He would save Sodom for ten people, or maybe He wanted Abraham to pray, to show that He would answer his prayer. God has a plan for all of us but he also lets us make our own decisions, such as accepting Jesus as our LORD and Savior. He gives us opportunities to do the right thing every day. It is up to us to do it. He also wants us to pray. Maybe God says, "I will give you some of the 'things' what you want, but you have to ask Me first." If you don't ask, a different path will be taken. That ties in with the "trivial prayers" question. Pray about it and have a deeper relationship with God, then it will be a lot easier to accept when God's answer is 'no'.
Maybe I am wrong, that is just my thoughts.
If your best friend gets sick and you pray for them and they get better, it doesn't mean God changed His will, it means that He answered your faithful prayer, just as He promised He would.
